Long before there were trails, villages, or names for these mountains, there was ice. 

As glaciers slowly retreated thousands of years ago, they carved these valleys, shaped these rivers, and left behind the extraordinary landscape surrounding Riverwood today.

Before Riverwood became a place of rest and renewal, this confluence was already serving that purpose. For centuries, people have been drawn to places where rivers meet, to gather, to reflect, to celebrate, and simply, to be. There is something timeless about the meeting of two rivers. A quiet reminder that every journey eventually connects with another.

At the meeting of the Ellis and Wildcat Rivers lies one of Riverwood's most remarkable places, a peaceful confluence where two mountain rivers become one.

Finding the Confluence: Follow Confluence Trail, beginning in the back right corner of the property. The gentle walk through the forest leads to a secluded stretch of river where smooth stones, a small sandy beach, and the crystal-clear waters of the Ellis and Wildcat Rivers create a setting that feels worlds away from everyday life.

Your invitation… ‍ ‍Slip off your shoes. Feel the cool river stones beneath your feet. Wade into the clear mountain water. Or, if the moment calls to you, embrace the invigorating experience of a full plunge where the two rivers meet. In every season, the water offers the same quiet invitation to awaken the senses, slow the breath, and reconnect with the present moment.

THE THRONE OF CONFLUENCE

Nearby rests one of Riverwood's most extraordinary natural features, an immense glacial erratic, carried here by ancient glaciers and gently placed above the confluence many years ago. Its shape feels almost intentional, forming a natural seat overlooking the rivers below. We call it The Throne of Confluence.

As you sit on the throne, rest your left hand on the stone beside you. There, you'll discover one of Riverwood’s mysteries.  A series of graceful, flowing grooves within the rock. Their serpentine movement echoing the rivers below. As you explore further, you'll notice a corresponding pattern on the neighboring glacial erratic, suggesting that the two stones may share part of the same story.

Run your fingertips gently along the grooves. Study their movement. Feel their texture. Imagine the immense passage of time they represent.

What created these remarkable patterns remains a mystery. They may be the result of an ancient geological process or the imprint of a fossil or prehistoric life. Whatever their origin, they continue to captivate us.

These extraordinary formations became the inspiration for the Riverwood logo, a design born not from imagination, but from nature itself.
